driving back from the beach today and this vehicle in front of me could not maintain his lane. got to the next redlight and the dude was texting in his job's work truck :fire:

how many innocent people have to die????

true, but at least if they get bagged they have to pay.

ny just added 2 points to your license as well as the fine.

Gary,

I agree. Not sure about TX yet. But localy it is against the law. They havvent stoped. Maybe the FCC needs to step in and stop the texting entirly. Also take cell phone back to being phones only. JMO

TX is trying to pass a law against texting while driving but it hasn't happened yet. It will be a tough one to enforce.

Laws aren't gonna stop these idiots from doing that or talking on the phone while driving.

Back when I drove OTR you'd be amazed all the things I'd see people doing while driving.

:fire::smack:

Gerry,

When my x-f-inlaw retired from the coast gaurd. He drove a couple of years for JB Hunt. Their cabs and computers and gps were set up with so much spy stuff. They knew everthing he was doing. Including sat cams.

Please think of the children, do it for the children.....

Life was simpler when you weaved in your lane because you were only drunk.

Andy, I'm curious about that too. Same goes for what you can and can't do with a phone while driving. For example, can you be accessing GPS information? (Any of it is a bad idea to do while driving--but I'm wondering what the actual law is...)

I think it would be "genius" to stop putting a law on this crap and spending for this mess and just have some company invent something new for safety in all vehicles. Have per say a box that is mounted in a vehicle, that a cell phone must be in securely and also plugged into the system via the multi-plug outlet that would be included in the box. The box would have certain software to recognize the presence of a cell phone and wouldn't allow a vehicle to start unless the cell phone would be plugged and inserted into the box. If the box is opened while the vehicle is in motion, an alert would come on and would say you have 10 seconds to shut the box or vehicle will shut off.

Anyway, something like this would help get these idiots off of their cell phones (talking, text)

Why not do what some movie houses do for cell phones....put a cell blocker program into the car so that when the car is on the cell signals are blocked. as soo as the key is off the cell will work again. Would stop ALL use of a cell. You want to talk or text pull over do your thing then move on.

You guys are forgetting about passengers with phones. Or what about if I witness a hit and run and someone is already helping the injured and I call and pursue..

As unfortunate as this might sound, I don't think any of it should be illegal. I do however feel if you injure anyone while on the phone/texting whatever you should be punished severely, all this slap on the wrist here's a ticket crap isn't good enough. No more driving and/or jail if there is a bad injury/death.

Bill,

Accessing the web is illegal too, I wonder about a Tom Tom or other GPS that's not a phone? It looks like you can't text when the vehicle is stopped in traffic either, so does that pertain to a stop sign when you're the only car? or a red Light? I'm assuming it does.

What about eating? Talking to a passenger? Arguing with your wife? Masturbating? Having (receiving) sex?

There are thousands of things that can and do distract drivers. We can't possibly outlaw all of them. It's crazy to try.

How about we just punish/fine/incarcerate those that get into the collissions that simply shouldn't have happened if they were being diligent behind the wheel?

Oh, wait, that would mean less rules, more accountability, and actually having to deal with things on a case-by-case basis. I've already argued here in other threads that we all get treated like adults just like that.

Some would rather be treated like children, and treat us all like children though.

Zero tolerance often makes zero sense.

Right. And amidst all the cries for more nanny-state, big-gov't, cradle to grave crap outlawing texting & driving, who's going to be charged with enforcing these laws? A cop, who after observing you texting & driving will begin pursuit, while talking/texting on his own cell phone, along with operating a radio to call in said pursuit, running your plates on his laptop, turning on his in-car camera, and possibly finishing his coffee & donut prior to pulling you over.

Tell me again... who's the more distracted driver?:banghead:
