The 2001 Sport Trac engine was rated at 205 HP. In 2002 or 2003 they were rated upwards to 210 HP for about one model year and then returned to the 205 HP rating.

What would you guess the horsepower would be with the addition of an intake system (like the K&N FIPK) and a performance exhaust (like the Magnaflow single exit cat-back)?

Truc Trac,

IIRC, back in 1997, Ford offered three engines in the Explorer. 4.0L OHV, 4.0L SOHC, and 5.0 L V8. That was the first year of the 4.0L SOHC engine. The 4.0L OHV engine was still offered in the Explorer in 2001, but as far as I know, never in the Trac.

Cory, you're probably talking about somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 horsepower for both mods. The K&N is usually good for about a 10% increase in horsepower according to their commercials, I don't think I've ever seen quite THAT much in any car, but I don't have any dyno results to back that up either. The exhaust will help you too, probably just as much as the K&N. The two things together will give you the greatest bump in performance when you consider that your engine is a big ol' air pump. The freer your intake and exhaust, the better your performance (to a point anyway). No matter what other mods you do, I recommend the XCal2 to use them to their full potential.

(I sound like an xcal2 salesman lately...)
