Gavin, some of the older more prestigious buildings in NYC and other cities still have them; and they help with packages, strollers, and provide a level of increased safety. And, often, it's more of a status thing than a true need.

No offense, but do you watch movies or get out of MO much? ;-)

You can travel a lot of this world without ever seeing an elevator operator.

And you can watch a lot of movies that show elevator operators without ever having a clue as to why they're needed. (In fact, you can spend a lot of time in buildings that have elevator operators, and still not have a clue as to why they're needed.) :)

Like I said, Bill V, there isn't really a need. Many "rich people" utilize servants and services that aren't needed:

- Elevator operators

- Doormen

- Valet

- Concierge

- Dog walkers

- Pet therapists

- Personal shoppers/assistants

...

The list goes on. And, I wouldn't expect many of us "common folks" to recognize the need; yet I bet to the people that use them, they seem a necessity.

I agree that those are not jobs that should be given tips. Especially where tax money is used to pay them.

How are all those transit workers going to collect their "tips" this year?

What jobs are you referring to that are paid through taxes?

Garbage collectors are paid through their employers, who directly charge their customers. The only way taxes are involved is in the occasions where the end customers are government entities.

Postal workers are paid through postage rates--no taxes involved.

Louisville (city), but not the entire metro, are paid for thru taxes.

right you are about the postal service.....I'm sure the upcoming postage rate increase will cover all of their federal retirement plan. (not)
