I received notice from the IRS that I was being audited. I showed up at the appointed time and place with all my financial records, and then sat for what seemed like hours as the accountant pored over them.

Finally the IRS agent looked up and commented, "You must have been a tremendous fan of Sir Arthur Doyle." "Why would you say that?" I said! "Because you've made more brilliant deductions on your last three returns than Sherlock Holmes made in his entire career."

LOL,J/K

Eddie,

Remember that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also wrote "Lost World" ...But it does appear that everything worked out for you.

I was told many years ago that you should take every deduction that you feel you are entitled to take as long as you have the documentation to back them up. The worst that can happen is that the IRS may disagree and not allow that deduction. If you feel strongly that you should be allowed to take that deduction, you can appeal and go to court....They IRS has a terrible record at winning court cases for deductions that are written in ambiguous language....The court will often side with taxpayer. As long as it's not fraud, or a dileberate attempt to avoid taxes, they cannot send yo to jail. You only have to pay the taxes and perhaps a small late penalty, which even that can be waived.

Better to try to get the discount you're due than be afraid and have to fork over more cash that seems to do little good.

Anyhow, this whole thing is a joke, right? That's how I read it, that there was no audit at all, or am I taking the "lol j/k" at the end too far?

KL,

I agree, that you are better off fighting it because the courts have been sympathetic to the Tax Payer when the IRS uses ambiguous wording.

I also agree that the original post might be a joke...but I was not sure.
