On my way home from work yesterday, I was in the left lane and a ranger was in the right. I heard what sounded like an explosion from the ranger and by the time I figured out what it was (a tire blowing), the ranger slammed into my rear passenger side sending me sliding sideways down the highway until I hit the grass and began to roll. There was no true side or front impact my airbags did not deploy.

Someone said the car rolled a few times. By the time I landed to a rest, the car was laying on the passenger side and my upper body was out of the driver's window. The seatbelt saved my life by keeping me in the car. Somehow my body torquing out the window kept the roof of the car from crushing me because as I lay out the window, my head and right shoulder were laying against the crushed roof of the car to my right.

Luckily there was a state trooper about 10 cars back from all of this chaos, and he instantly came to my help along with several others, including the driver of the ranger. I was conscious for the whole thing. It took the firefighters about 30 minutes to cut me out of the car, load me up and send me to the trauma unit. I was hurting badly, but otherwise all-there.

After a few hours in the ER, lots of scans and x-rays, they sent me home with basically lots of bumps and bruises, some chunks of skin missing, and a cautious smile.

Today, I'm sore but alive. I still haven't come to terms with all of this. I can't quite figure out how I survived. One more roll I would have been crushed. No seatbelt I would have been thrown. And if I hadn't somehow ended up partially out of the window, I'd be crushed inside the car.

I'm posting all of this today because I can, which is pretty amazing. Please everyone, drive safe (even though accidents happen) and tell everyone you love how much they mean to you ever day. You never know.

holy crap Jenn D. Glad you are here to spread your words of wisdom. I can't believe you made it out in the condition that you did.

Some people here are going to tell you that somebody was looking out for you that day. That may be true, but either way, you are one lucky person. Better go to the Casino ASAP.

Hope you recover quickly and glad your still with us.

it should be a no-brainer Greg, I agree. But all too often, you hear stories like mine with a sad ending because someone didn't take the time to buckle up.

I can absolutely say, beyond a shadow of a doubt, WEARING MY SEATBELT SAVED MY LIFE YESTERDAY.

Glad you are ok. I was in the rear seat of a big 4 door caddy when we flipped over a guard rail and rolled down an embankment 4 or 5 times. I was like a sock in a clothes dryer. Got out of the car and climbed up the hill not a scratch on me. By the way there were 4 of us in that car. Not a scratch on anyone.

Glad you did buckle up, Jenn. Was in an accident once, without my seatbelt. Head hit windshield, just a minor concusion from what I felt, didn't need to go to hospital, the one time, I DID NOT wear my belt. Just hope from here on out, Ford and the other car makers, reinforce the roofs of SUV's more than waht they are. In the mean time, sit back, relax and enjoy your life!!!:):):):):)

Jen, Glad to hear you're OK. Your description of the incident gave me flashbacks of close calls I've been in where nothing happened, but this is a wake up call that at any time, our whole life could change dramatically in an instant. None of us are immune. As Greg said "sit back, relax and enjoy your life!!!"

The Focus did its job. It protected your life. If you were driving something else, you may not have been so lucky.

Got any pictures of the car?

Tom

Really happy to hear you're alright, though I've never met any of you from the site except Yogi, I consider all of you friends if not extended family. It was a good thing you weren't driving your ST, that wouldve been a whole other story with how high it stands. I'm not sure the truck wouldve protected you like the Focus did, probably wouldve been alot worse. :)Thankfully you're o.k. though. Was everyone else involved alright?

I wish I had pictures of the car. I'm actually eager to see it...once I figure out where the hell it is. When I am able to, I will take pictures, though I'm not sure what there is to see...

You'll be proud Tom, it's probably a convertible now. :)

Not that material things matter, but it really sucks hard because as some of you may remember, I just shelled out $500 on new tires about a month ago.

Wow Jenn! Glad to hear you're OK. Were you on I-4, East/West Exp?

BTW, I had a car with new tires totaled once. I showed the insurance co. the receipt and they gave me back the full amount for the tires.

Doug - this happened on 528 just before the onramp to 417. There wasn't a whole lot of people on the road, which I guess was luck too. As for the tires, thanks for the tip.

And thank you everyone for the well-wishes. I'll keep you all updated on the progress.

Glad you're ok!

And on the more practical side, get the insurance co. to reimburse you for the tires. Find your receipt or get the tire co. to reprint it for you.

Gavin,

nobody disputes the existence of angles..

Some may dispute the existence of ANGELS

Sorry, couldn't help myself!
