On my way home from work yesterday, I was in the left lane and a ranger was in the right. I heard what sounded like an explosion from the ranger and by the time I figured out what it was (a tire blowing), the ranger slammed into my rear passenger side sending me sliding sideways down the highway until I hit the grass and began to roll. There was no true side or front impact my airbags did not deploy.
Someone said the car rolled a few times. By the time I landed to a rest, the car was laying on the passenger side and my upper body was out of the driver's window. The seatbelt saved my life by keeping me in the car. Somehow my body torquing out the window kept the roof of the car from crushing me because as I lay out the window, my head and right shoulder were laying against the crushed roof of the car to my right.
Luckily there was a state trooper about 10 cars back from all of this chaos, and he instantly came to my help along with several others, including the driver of the ranger. I was conscious for the whole thing. It took the firefighters about 30 minutes to cut me out of the car, load me up and send me to the trauma unit. I was hurting badly, but otherwise all-there.
After a few hours in the ER, lots of scans and x-rays, they sent me home with basically lots of bumps and bruises, some chunks of skin missing, and a cautious smile.
Today, I'm sore but alive. I still haven't come to terms with all of this. I can't quite figure out how I survived. One more roll I would have been crushed. No seatbelt I would have been thrown. And if I hadn't somehow ended up partially out of the window, I'd be crushed inside the car.
I'm posting all of this today because I can, which is pretty amazing. Please everyone, drive safe (even though accidents happen) and tell everyone you love how much they mean to you ever day. You never know.
