Took my Trac in to the dealer because it was dying & stumbling on cold startups. It did the same thing last year & they replaced the intake gasket for 350.00. It ran fine until it started getting colder this year. Took it back in & they replaced the MAF for 350.00. Next day it did the same thing except it now showed 2 trouble codes instead of the 4 it was showing before putting it in the shop. Now they tell me the intake may need to be replaced. They said something about one of the ports or something looked dry like it might be sucking air. The quote to fix that is 700.00. Also informed me that the spark plugs looked pretty bad. Cost? 8.00 each for plugs & 99.00 labor

Any advice? Prayers? Donations?:D

That word they used,"might be"...would leave me leary...sounds like they are guessing..that somee expensive guessing...

I would do the plugs and wires myself...then see how it runs...You can buy those parts for less than half thier cost...

The intakes are easy to pull on these engines also...

Edit; Have you checked the infamous vaccum elbow and the dpfe sensor ?

No warranty on the previous work????

Also did you check the IAC motor and the vacuum elbow that is common???

Actually $99 labor for changing the plugs is not bad. Heck, I'd pay that so I wouldn't have to lose all that skin on my knuckles.

It sounds like they are just guessing and changing parts at your expense. I would be on them to refund the cost of the new MAF since it obviously was not the cause of the problem.

I would not let them replace any parts unless they have confirmed that is the cause of the problem and if it does not solve the problem then they eat the cost. Also it makes no sense to remove the spark plugs to check them and then say that it will cost $99 in labor to install new ones plus $8 per plug. If kyou decide you don't want new plugs, are they going to charge you $99 to put the old one back???

I'm afraid these guys would need to do a lot of explaining to convince me that they have a clue as to what they are doing.

Changing the plugs is surprisingly easy if you remove the passenger-side tire/wheel. The drivers' side plugs are pretty easy to reach.

I do have a spare intake for a sport trac, if you need/want it, make me an offer. I haven't taken the extra parts over to the dealership yet, so if anyone needs anything that came off the truck when the supercharger went on, I'll sell it cheap. ;)

Baron, I'll keep that in mind---What do you want for the intake?

Codes are were: 1131, 1132, 1151 & 1152.

After the MAF it shows 1131 & 1151 (still)

Tonka,

I'm not sure what 1132 & 1152 are, but I just had 1131 & 1151 (and 0171 & 0174) on my ST. 1131 & 1151 show up with a manufacturer air/fuel mixture (lean, in my case) condition as well as the other two. In my case, it was the fuel pump. 1st time is was at 80K and now at 106K. It would stumble after driving for a while. Once it started, I couldn't put hardly any pressure on the pedal or it would quit accelerating. You might want to get a fuel pressure gauge and see if you are losing pressure when that starts happening.

Just got the call. Cleaning the fuel system didnt cure it. Yep, It needs a new intake.

I'm pickin" it up in a half hour, I'll figure something else out.

Do it myself?? I dunno. I'd sure like to.

I'm at least gonna check out other mechanics.

1131 = Lack of HO2S11 Switch - Sensor indicates Lean

1132 = Lack of HO2S11 Switch - Sensor indicates Rich

1151 = Lack of HO2S21 Switch - Sensor indicates Lean

1152 = Lack of HO2S21 Switch - Sensor indicates Rich

TESTING THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR

LATEST ADVICE

The MAF is a sensitive and accurate device and is relied on to a great extent for the fuelling and Load calculations made by the EECV Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The Comprehensive Component Monitor (CCM) programming checks the MAF for high and low values (P0100 to P0104), and also checks the MAF input for rationality by comparing it with the Throttle Position (TP) sensor data, (P1121) but the latest advice is that the programming may not be sufficiently sensitive to detect a corroded or failing MAF sensor. As the MAF fails it may read too high; this leads to excessively lean fuel mixture and, in automatics, incorrect gear selection.

DRIVING CONCERNS

The function of the MAF is described in Module and that it needs regular cleaning is in Clean MAF. However, sometimes cleaning the MAF does not produce the right result.

Ford advice details some or all of the following concerns :

poor driving behaviour

engine shudder

engine ringing noises

engine speed variations

power loss under maximum acceleration

illumination of the TIL (this is the O/D light)

These concerns may also be accompanied by the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

P0171 Bank 1 Fuel System too Lean

P0174 Bank 2 Fuel System too Lean (V6 models only)

P0172 Bank 1 Fuel System too Rich

P0175 Bank 2 Fuel System too Rich (V6 models only)

P1130 Lack Of HO2S11 Switch - Adaptive Fuel At Limit

P1131 Lack Of HO2S11 Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean

P1132 Lack Of HO2S11 Switch - Sensor Indicates Rich

P1150 Lack Of HO2S21 Switch - Adaptive Fuel At Limit (V6 only)

P1151 Lack Of HO2S21 Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean (V6 only)

P1152 Lack Of HO2S21 Switch - Sensor Indicates Rich (V6 only)

NOTE: Some vehicles may show these DTCs with no driveability concerns shown above - but even so this check should be carried out to ensure that the MAF is not the cause of the problem. Of course, these DTCs can also be caused by other problems too - in this case they are being used as an indication

Try cleaning this !!!

Tonka, make me an offer I can't refuse on the intake and it's yours. :)

If you want the rest of the crap that they took off the trac, I'll give you that too, free of charge! I don't even know what all is in that box, it's a pretty large box of parts. If you happen to know what comes off of a trac when it's supercharged, you'll have all the information you will ever need.
