Poted under general info because it's pretty important for all of us and the safety of our pc's. I've already been fighting rootkit trojans in my day to day pc clean-up adventures for clients.

Pretty ballsy of Sony to do something like that. Guess we'll have to see how it all falls out, but this has got to be illegal.

Actually, that's a pretty sophisticated trojan. Most spyware trojans are stupidly written (thank gawd). I hope they get the virtual book thrown at them.

I read about that a couple of days ago. Gotta thank Sony for making computers more vulnerable to exploits. Yet another good reason to disable auto-run and auto-play on your CD drives. Download a copy of rootkit revealer and check out your system.

Big Business in it's finest hour.

They couldn't get away with the price gaiuging on CD's. I bet they get out of this one.

As for the laser printers, big brother is watching. Even if you aren't doing anything illegal, I still do not like the idea. We are becomming a police state and people sit back and let it happen. It won't be long until we get chips under our skin.

Todd, I was aware of that. In fact. Big Brother has caught a few counterfeiting criminals as a result of the coded print....

Caymen is right....not sure who invented the VCR, but I am not sure it is SONY; regardless the hypocracy that Scott talks about is the landmark case "Sony vs Universal Studios" and it was determined that Sony was within its rights to sell the betamax VCR, though Universal and others thought it would be used to break copyright law.

The hypocracy being that Sony is now breaking laws to assure people don't break copyright laws.

Actually, I think it was Panasonic that invented the VHS.

The VCR is named after the "Video Casette Recorder". The actual format is VHS which I think is "Video Home System".

Sony's Betamax was the first, commercially succesful home VCR, but it was eclipsed in sales soon by JVC's VHS format, mostly because it was cheaper and marketed better. Sony was the initial leader for the early adopter, but JVC and others won out and took over the market with the inferior VHS technology. Betamax had a better picture than VHS, but VHS had longer, cheaper tapes from the get-go, and that and the lower price of the units made them better for the home market.

Yeah, I used "better" several times in my post, but I think you are talking about the last instance...and if so, in that context I meant "better" from a standpoint that it "better suited". They read the market, its needs, and its price point and played the consumers like a fiddle.
