Interior trim and body trim

So just out of curiosity, what makes the decision for the body trim? I though at first it was to match the interior but after searching it doesn't make sense.

I've seen body trim in black, gray, tan, and color match, then the interior in the same 3. (dark graphite, medium graphite, and camel)

But I've seen black body trim with tan interior. So, the question how is the exterior body trim decided?

On the 1st gen tracs there were three exterior trim options: grey, black and color match (to truck body color). From 01 to 03 grey was the only option. In 2004 a dark grey/black was standard. In 2005 color match became available but I think that was only on adrenaline models. Any other colors you might see are aftermarket. That is the first tan one ive ever seen. It is common to see painted trim because the grey trim was widely hated.

I have had quite a few tracs over the years and if base model black in 04 but not a glossy, so more of a dull and prior was more gray, on xlt models some were the same as color. this was my truck in 04 after purchase, i painted it silver thinking it would look better. i put paint matched silver from my xlt spare trac but thinking of going back to my black ones. I have window stickers for both my 04s and one has the trim match paint option for the xlt.
