I have the scangauge 2. My trac was running a few degrees higher than normal, 198. It was doing this, before the under-drive pulleys. I just chalked it up to our super hot summer here in Houston, this year. Last summer it Idled around 192-196.

With the under-drive pullys, this summer. Idle temps with AC ran as high as 215-217. 198 while driving.

No boil-over (sealed-system) would have to get hotter. Would have to get over 220 for a 16psi cap to relieve.

I decided use a 180 T-stat. Now the Idle temps are 202-204 @ highest. Driving temps are 190-194. Thats a good range. If you have under-drives. You might consider a 180 t-stat.

I always check new t-stats before install. I have got new ones that were bad. I suspended the new 180 and the oem 195 in a pot of water on the stove. Checked the water temp with a thermometer.

The new 180 reached 100% open @ 190. The oem 195 was only cracked open (20%) @ a 212 boil. The oem was shot.

I may have to go back to oem in the winter.

Good number and good tests.......

I know I would hate to switch back adn forth winter/summer... the wear on the parts and things like that would scare me...

Try it out and see....

ALSO I would make sure that your 02 sensors are going into closed loop and that the fuel managwement doesent keep the truck running a little richer due to the colder temps..

Agree with Todd about the O2 sensors. The other thing, if an engine is predisposed to run at say, 200*, then whether you have a 180* or 190* thermostat isn't going to matter. It will open at 180* but that doesn't necessarily mean that the engine is going to run 10* cooler all the time.
