I am loooking to buy a used sport trac. Is a 2001 4x4 with 85000 too many miles. How does everyone feel about the Sport Trac? I have always had a F150. F150 will go for 150 to 200000 miles

Will the Sport Trac compete for longevity?

I am the farthest from a Sport Trac expert as you can get, only getting mine last night. But with any car, it's not the brand. Truth be told, it's the care that the vehicle has recieved over those 85K miles. I've seen some cars with 70K miles in better shape than an abused car with a third of the miles.

Do you research, get your carfaxes - etc, and take it to your family/otherwise reputable mechanic.

Though from what I know of it, the 4.0L is a pretty solid engine.

I would have it checked out by a reputable mechanic or one of those services that do that..I can have it done through my credit union for $80..could be money well spent..if it was taken care of 85K miles is ok if the price is right and it checks out healthy...

Enginewise you should not have a problem as long as proper maintenance has been done, check the records if the previous owner has them. The transmission should have been flushed at 30k and 60k miles.

Tez is right, have a trusted mechanic do a torough checkup

I'm with Tez...get checks done on the ST and with proper care (tune ups, oil change etc) most of the time the engine will out last the car body. My ST is up to 106000 miles, it's an 02 and running like the day she left the dealership. I keep up with the tune ups and use the syntec-oil (i.e Mobil 1) and fuel/oil stabelizers such as Lucas. As with any new and especially used car, there will be issues. The only issuess so far with the ST's around here are faily simple and common that just about anyone here can give you advice and help you save some cash. Some people here know more about the ST then the actual Ford Tecs.

N-E ways, just my two-cents

I got 200,000 miles out of my '92 Escort...it finally blew up. 194,000 miles in my wife's '97 Escort...we traded it in and it still ran like a top.105,000 on my '97 Ranger when I traded it toward the Trac...I change my oil religiously every 3,000 miles on all my vehicles so I'd say the upkeep is a big part of it, but wait...my wife's '02 Chrysler Voyager gets the same TLC and has been nothing but a pain in the apple bag since it hit 60,000 miles...so I'd also say that it might be the brand too.:D

I've been considering selling mine. I love it and have absolutely no complaints but I haven't used it in 6 months. My work supplies me with a vehicle so I took it off the road to save on car insurance. I run it every couple of weeks but that really makes me depressed to just have it sit there. It's also a 2001 but I only have 33,000 miles on it.

It wasnt a crack. If you believe that one Ford product will last that long then why wouldn't the ST? Honestly, it has more to do with how you take care of the vehicle. If you can get a F150 to last 200K miles then you must take great care of your trucks.......I dont see why the ST wouldnt last that long with the propee care and love.
