I spent three weeks at a job in Wisconsin one year. I wondered why almost all the houses had a second floor balcony not much larger than an open door. SOmeone told me it was how they got out of the house when it snowed more than 10 feet deep! Not sure if that was true or not, but it seemed possible!
It also reminds me of the story about a couple that went to check on one of their parents, because they hadn't heard from them in a few days. It took awhile to find their house, because it was completely buried in snow! No power, no phone, but plenty of firewood!
