When I first changed the oil on my Trac after 1000 miles I received a nasty surprise when I removed the filter: it immediately spewed oil, flowed down my arm and created a mess around the catch bucket. I did all the oil changes on my previous 95 Ranger (throughout 100K miles) and never had such a problem. I think this had a lot to do with how the Ranger's filter was angled and there was a drain channel for the oil to flow (FYI I was using Puralator Pure One filters).

After another 3000 miles I changed the oil again and as soon as the Motorcraft filter came loose, it started spewing oil like a geyser, oil drained over the filter before I got the chance to move it out of the way, again creaing a mess. I realized that since the filter on our Sport Tracs was mounted up-right, my best bet was to unscrew it as fast as possible and yank the filter out of the way before gravity had its way with the oil.

After the second or third oil change I switched from Motorcraft dino-oil to Mobil 1 synthetic and tried out K&N's Performance Gold filter (pt#HP-2010). When time came to change the oil and filter (near 5000 miles) I had another surprise, but a pleasant one: after the K&N filter came loose there was no gushing of oil everywhere...only a light trickle if that. Since then, I've continued to use the K&N filter with the same results (around every 5000 miles): no oil spillage! I thought I'd give a head's up to you DIY folks who've been getting oil all over yourselves when removing the oil filter.

After loosening, I use a half gallon Zip-Loc bag around the filter. It catches the oil and can be zipped closed.

I usually use Motorcraft filters, they spill very little if at all. If you get a lot of spill, most likely the anti-drainback valve in the filter is malfunctioning. Some filters have better ADBV's than others.

Yardsale's advice works. I use a ziploc freezer bag as they are a bit thicker and tougher than the standard bags.

I've changed my oil 3 times so far since I've had the trac always using motorcraft full syth oil and filters and never have dropped a single drip of oil on myself when changing the filter maybe its just my steady hands.

steady hands here, I let the engine cool for at least 30 minutes, the filter unscrews easily by hand, slow turns toward end of thread, small dribble, ease it down slowly.

Pure One or Motorcraft filters here.

I prefer to change my oil while the engine is still warm in that hopes that most of the particulate matter is still suspended in the oil and will get removed during the draining.

I was using motorcraft filters and have noticed that the anti drain back valves are not holding, and i get the valve chatter for a split second in the morning, I stuck a fram on there and the noise is gone.

Wounder if motorcraft has a bad batch of drain back valves???

I've been having that issue with the motorcraft and the purolator, I hear they're the same.

Need to try a fram now, it's getting annoying.

Frams are about the worst filters out there as far as strength and filter area goes. If you MUST get a Fram, at least buy a ToughGard and not the plain Fram filter. If the Motorcrafts are giving you trouble and you don't want to spend as much as the K&N or Mobil 1 filters cost, split the difference and get a NAPA Gold for about $6.00.

Although changing it yourself, you can get a jug of Mobil 1 at Wally-World for $20, a Mobil 1 or K&N filter at AutoZone for $10, and therefore use the really good stuff for what a shop would charge you to put in the cheap stuff and it's good for 5000 miles at least.

omg??? Is my ST going to blow up now, What should I do.??:unsure:

I put an inferior part on it, Is it going to roll over now??..

Can I still rent a u-haul this weekend???

THIS IS THE FILTER POLICE! STEP AWAY FROM THE TRAC!

What's this here? A Fram? But being that this is a K&N, the strongest and most powerful oil filter in the world, you've got to ask yourself one question. "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya punk?

:lol::p

I've used K&N filters on my Toyota. Granted, they do seem to be put together very well and have a thick steel liner.

However, they are not twice as good as a Motorcraft FL-820s. Wal-Mart here still sells the 820s for $4. I have to pay $10 for a K&N via mail order.
