I bought a can of refridgerant/oil with a gauge and tried it out. It looks as though I may be doing something wrong because when I put the gauge on it and push down, it looks like it reads over 100 psi. Is it possible I was reading from the hi port or something? Where is the high side port?

The ports are 2 different sizes, the hose kits only fit the low side...

You have to turn on the compressor and the ac on max and fan on high and add the can that way... ALSO hold the can upside down so you get the liquid not the gas...

where is the high side port? I don't know if i got it on all the way or not. it just scared me that it was reading over 100 psi and in warning mode!

The low side is on the passenger side by the firewall.... I think the high side is more toward the front of the truck...

The pressure should go up and down as the compressor runs, IF it did not run and you where reading 100PSI, that was ok...

You have to let it run, and as it runs the pressure will drop into the green....

IF not, you may have a clog or something else wrong..

First thing to remember is to never try to add the liquid to the system by turning the refrigerant can upside down. Liquids are not compressible and this can/will destroy your compressor. Allways keep the can upright so that only gas will be added to the system. The high pressure that you are seeing is probally only when the system is not on. You will need to turn the system on high for at least 5 minutes with the engine at about 2200 RPMs. Then connect your freon to the suction side of the compressor (large port). If you have a large fan place it in front of the radiator. Depending on conditions (ambient temperature, air circulation through the radiator etc.) add refrigerant until the pressure is about 28-32 PSI.

Hornet,

The cans I have bought here specifically tell you to hold them upside down....

It allways pays to follow instructions. Your supplier must have a dip tube in the can to prevent you from adding liquid to the suction of the compressor. I have seen mechanics invert the can momentarily adding liquid to speed the charging process. But this carries risk.
