In my technical writing classes the use of ellipses was recommended to be kept at a minimum and avoided if at all possible.

;)

BTW, I use them ALL THE TIME...really!

Also, do you want to "address" the differences or "discuss", "compare" or "review" the differences. "Addressing" would imply to remedy or remove, correct?

Hey TJR,

I also did a quick search and came up with this from Columbia University...

Avoid use of "in this paper" in the abstract. What other paper would you be talking about here?

I know a lot of english teachers have pet peeves like this and I would have to have him be penalized for something so small. That is the reason I posted--not anything personal against what you wrote.

Thanks for the link George. However it seems like one CS prof's pet peeve to me, but I will accept it.

But, as I said before; can anyone give an alternative to "in this paper" or variants that convey the same meaning?

I have also been told not to use "We", "I" or "My" (as in "we will discuss", "I will discuss", "it is my intent to show"...so what else is left, unless you drop the notion altogether?
