Aloha guys,

I am trying to open a pdf document file in Open Office 3. When I open the file, I get a dialog box asking for - "character set"." Default font" (new times Roman is ok). "Language" (english is ok). The problem is, the doc. doesn't open in anything legible. I have tried different character sets ie Chinese or Greek or many of the others but there is no change in the doc. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks Ed

I have Open Office, and as far as I know, you can't open a PDF there. You can export an Open Office document to a PDF.

You need to open the PDF in Adobe Reader -- free download, if you don't have Reader already. That's how I do it.

Hi Ed,

My offer holds. Free accommodations in January and I will come there for 2 weeks and teach you all about computers.

Failing that, are you trying to "view" a PDF document or "open" it. If you want to view it only there are many programs that will do that for you. Adobe Reader is one (refuse the google toolbar if you download it). If you actually want to "open" a PDF to modify it in some way, you need Adobe Acrobat and that costs $$. Depending on your connections, quite a lot of money.

I have heard of some success with Cute PDF which is a free download. It could/should allow you to open and modify PDF files.

If you need more info, feel free to email me and I can phone you for free (it costs me nothing).
