Defense in depth:

1) Alarm

2) Large dog (or small noisey dog)

3) Shotgun

4) Handgun

5) Neighbors with shotguns and handguns

6) A local police department with a "we'll help bury the body" attitude. (just kidding)

In all seriousness, Clark Howard talks about this on his show fairly often. Link to his basic advice below.

I don't recall ADT offering wireless systems when I was pricing them out. In fact they claimed they were substandard. I used to use safehome, and they suck. I came home from work to find my house broken into, the alarm going off, and according to the monitoring service it had been for 6 hours. I ended up getting a years free service and all my money back. Personally I like having one in the house, more so that it wakes me up if someone comes in, I'm not worried about something happening when I'm gone. Luckily the alarm still goes off with or without monitoring.

I used to have some great neighbors. On the right DEA on the left FBI. Now I just have the Russian Maffia two doors down and across the street. No one messes with our neighborhood...LOL BTW, I'm not joking.
