At some time these people have to quit relying on the government to do things for them. They are given a chance to educate themselves but prefer not to. There is work available but most choose to stay at home and get the welfare checks. What else can be done?

That's as much the fault of our government as it is the recipients, no?

Why do they have "Do Not Feed The Animals" and "Do Not Take Animals Home" signs at the nature preserves?

I was under the impression it was because once domesticated the animals can't take care of themselves, rely on people, and are worse off for it.

Should we treat our poor any differently?

They don't need a hand-out, they need a hand-up!

But views are always different..."Where is Jesse Jackson" someone says in this forum, what the hell does that mean?

Well, I wondered the same thing, where is Jesse Jackson, not "what the hell does that mean". Where is Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the NAACP, Farrakan(sp?) or any other leader black leader that can show some leadership to these citizens and finally be a part of the solution instead of always being the ones to stir up problems.

Jesse Jackson can draw national attention to a incident at a Stratford Forest high school about a White police officer drawing his weapon in a drug bust within the school and some young Black girl was scared, so Jesse thought that was of national importance, but now look at how the looters and thugs and hoodlums in N.O. are acting against everybody, young, old, white, black, tourists, neighbors, rescuers, police and what have you. A very sad way to have America portrayed all over the world, and definately not the best way for the people of color to further their cause of equality and such.

But now it is all ok because these people are deprived of the good things in life, they live in poverty stricken neighborhoods, and this is the only way they know to survive.(Sarcastic) What a crock of B.S.. A woman on TV there saying "I got 8 babies to feed, what are we supposed to do?", huh?... hmmm, let's see, how about thinking about how you are going to provide for that many children before you give birth to them, or is that part of the mentality of, the more babies I have, the more money the government gives me. I gotta leave this one alone before it gets my blood boiling and some people get offended.

The Mayor of N.O. blames alot of what is happening now on the Federal government, I gotta throw in the B.S. towel on that one too. He is the Mayor and knows what the effect was going to be within his city. I have seen pictures of hundreds of Yellow school buses parked in knee deep water within the city of N.O., now why couldn't their disaster preparedness plan include those buses as a means to evacuate the city long before the city was flooded.

There are going to be a lot of questions about N.O. for along time, ie, the city oficials and the rest of the country knew how succeptable N.O. is to flooding, but yet, there is no emergency backup system of pumps to deal with the water that came in.

It all goes back to the quote from one of the looters I posted previously: "People who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society". Not to turn this into a racial thing but when exactly are they going to quit blaming others for their problems? People like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are just faning the flames. It's a sad state our country is in. I keep thinking of the old JFK quaote: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". Whatever happened to the American spirit of taking care of themselves first.

It's mostly black people shooting and looting because it's mostly black people who live there.

It seems pretty easy for Jesse Jackson to send a caravan of buses with protesters to D.C. for one thing or another, how about sending some buses to N.O. and Biloxi? IMO Jesse ceased to be relevant a while ago.

A woman on TV there saying "I got 8 babies to feed, what are we supposed to do?",

It is amazing! Once again, how is it anyone elses responsibility to take care of these 8 kids. My daughter lived up in MD for the past 2 years. Now that she is back living with us and my wife and I have another child on the way, our plans are to have her and the kids evacuate earlier and farther than when it was just the two of us. The first thought on this woman's mind should have been years before this storm... "How am I going to get my family out of here is a hurricane ever threatens New Orleans?" Your most imprtant job as a parent is to protect your kids... PERIOD :angry::angry:

Amazing....

Question, what makes Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson relevant in this issue? If they were to even say anything right or wrong all they get is crap from many people right here in this post that don't care one way or the other if there is any validity in what they say! Right now this is not supposed to even be a race related event, which means any and all opportunities to evacuate the city and recieve help from government officials is for ALL Americans down there, not a select group. The probelm is it does not seem to be the case here for some reason that has yet to be exlplained. I say maybe between 200k-250k people got out but that still leaves ~200k-300k people. Does anyone know where the rest these 300K people went? Is it possible they all had cars and managed to escape? Also where was the other evacuation sites set up and what was the racial/social makeup of these points? I am curious to know.

Are they having the same issues of basic survival?

Josey

I think your question has been answered Joseymack. The first thing Jackson did upon arriving in Baton Rouge was pull out the race card.

From Yahoo! News the above link is for...

BATON ROUGE, La. - Racism is partly to blame for the deadly aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, calling President Bush's response to the disaster "incompetent."

You know, once the race card gets pulled out, it makes no sense in discussing it any further.

It is a sad week in American history. We have a natural disaster of unimaginable proportions and a good percentage of 'Americans' can find reasons to look the other way. Mostly as a result of a few images of a few African Americans taking advantage of the situation. Half a million people are homeless, jobless, and many are penniless with little hope and all you "Christians" can opine about is the race card. After five long days without any relief, the US government bringing in some support. Hopefully this doesn't set a precedence. Certainly these people paid federal taxes for the last couple of centuries like you and I. So is it unreasonable for them to expect some federal help when something like this occures.

Out of the 500,000 people who are now homeless, only a handful are looters and probably a significantly small percentage are welfare recipients. Most are desperate for food, water and not knowing what lies ahead. But because they are mostly Black, God fearing Christians can find reasons for their deserved fate. The response was different in mostly white NYC after 9/11. Help was immediate, it came from the entire nation and the outpouring was overwhelming. It's different if you are poor and or black. You deserve it.

But it's okay for Jesse Jackson to play the race card? And you obviously know little about New Orleans where an estimated 70% of the population lives in poverty, where crime is high, and very few of these people paid taxes. The looting started within minutes after the storm went through, long before the real flooding and desperation took place. Here in Houston, over 100,000 refugees are in the area. I'm going to be volunteering this weekend to help wherever I can. How much help has San Diego offered?

I do feel for these people but do not condone the atrocious behavior by more than "a handfull".

You tell them TomT...I love it how those west-coasters in their perfect little world like to preach on how the rest of us should live. The most self-indulgent state in the union...CA.

Stevieball-I think its unfair to judge all of u s Christians by a few bad examples. Please don't assume you know what all Christians believe. My philosophy of Christianity is found in a song-"they will know we are Christians by our Love." Of course my personal faith goes much deeper than this.
