Item has been received and working in a matter of minutes, installed in a matter of a few hours (interruptions from the wife and kids), and not to mention mounting and wire routing questions. I did take photos of the install but that will be uploaded soon (busy schedule, sorry). The operation of the unit is great, although I do have minor issues with the unit.
I have a 30 gig Ipod photo, with an external device that allows you to record onto the iPod (I forget the name). It connects onto the top of the iPod. It allows you to record and then listen to what was recorded while connected. It has an external (very small internal) speaker. Again, while connected the device allows you to hear or listen to the iPod, on the spot. With the iPod cranked all the way up, you can hear the innards of the iPod working. It’s the same situation when the adaptor unit is connected. Again, at very high volumes but at normal and or low volumes, it works fine, no noise.
As for the auxiliary or secondary (RCA) connection no noise at all what so ever, but while connected to the RCA auxiliary connection the iPod will not be charged. The main or primary connection will connect directly to the bottom of the iPod and charge the unit at the same time.
I hacked an FM modulator cable and grafted two RCA male connections to it (left and right). Allowing an iPod to connect directly into an RCA input, i.e. home stereo, amp, TV, self powered speakers, ect. . The home made connection was attached to the secondary (auxiliary) input on the converter, allowing two iPods to be connected at either end of the truck. My little girl can now connect her iPod using the rear (aux.) connection, without having to drag the cable from the front of the truck to the rear. We can now listen to my little girl’s iPod while she navigates through the iPod herself, allowing the driver (me) to concentrate on the road. Although it would not make any sense for one person to listen to the iPod through the rear console using the mute function but if two people want to listen then the rear console makes perfect sense.
You can use a “ Y “ connection to connect multiple items at a time or just run one RCA cable with female connections to plug whatever you may want to hear out of the truck’s audio system, when using the aux. connection.
Sorry for the long story, I will post my install process soon. Enjoy.
Here is what I purchased.
