My windshield is heavily pitted and with sunglare during the day and oncoming lights at night, it's become a real pain to see through it at times. Is there any way to repair this without replacing the windshield?

IMO, I would not go through the insurance company. They will file it as a claim, and it gives them an excuse to raise your rates.

cheers,

Scott, I am not so sure all states and all insurance companies consider windshield coverage under comp. This has come up here in the past, and many have said that their windshield coverage is NOT comp (in NY and PA is).

That is interesting Scott, and good information.

I suppose the best thing to do is check with your insurance company to first see if they cover it, and second, how the claim will affect your policy.

My wife had a rock chip repair done on our Audi and it showed up on my policy as a claim. I payed for that rock chip probably 20 times over before I was done.

But different companies have different protocols, and fall under different state regulations. Again, just check with your company first to make sure it won't financially count against your claim record.

And as far as what to do with the windshield, it does need to be replaced. There have been a few "glazing" products come and go from the market, but none that I am aware of work very well. Although, they do work great on eyeglasses.

cheers,

I've had several windshields replaced and my rates were never raised. It is covered under comprehensive coverage here in Missouri. My insurance company will even waive the deductible (if there is one) and pay for free repairs for cracked or chipped windshields, and if the repair doesn't last or is unacceptable, they replace the windshield for free.

You can try to polish out small pits and scratches with cerium oxide, but if you remove much material at all, you will get noticable optical distortions.

I have the same problem. Wish my Allstate coverage had zero deductible for windshields. With my $1000 deductible I won't be going through the insurance company.

Ha, here windshield coverage is 250 bucks cnd a year. I can replace the windshield for that price once a year. I will just save my money for when I need it.

TomT, check with your state department of insurance (I think you are in Texas). It is not your insurance company that decides if you have a deductible on your windshield. It will be a state law telling your insurance company that they can or can not have a windshield deductible. Here in Florida the state says no windshield deductible and the insurance companies have to obey. I guess it is because of the safety issue and maybe because the state is responsible for the road debris that cause all the windshield damage off the highways??????

Insurance companies won't raise your rates because of comprehensive claims, but if they review your file and see that you've had 3 claims in 5 years, whatever they may be, they can find a way to drop you. Just one would probably be OK, though. I wouldn't make a habit of it.
