Wife wants her old wrought iron patio furniture painted again. Last time I sandblasted it all, primed and painted with Krylon. It lasted about 5 years. I'm thinking powercoating may be the way to go. Any ideas what this is gonna cost me for a small table frame and four chair frames?

I have no idea if this will be $10, $100, or $1,000.

Thanks

Gavin,

I have done my own powder coating for my LeverLift business, but all my parts were small and I used a large toaster oven.

I am assuming they wil have to sand-blast the old paint off, clean the pieces and then powder-coat and bake. My guess is about $75-$100 per piece, but as a packaged deal you should be able to get it done for about $300.

The real problem is the size of the pieces. The blasting, cleaning and powdercoating is fairly cheap, but the large oven needed to bake those large pieces are very expensive...hence a higher price.

thanks.

I have no idea, and I know shops can't accurately quote work sight unseen on the phone.

Your reply gives me hope that it may not be a lost cause to load it all up in the Trac and take it to the local shop. They advertise that their oven is one of the largest in the area, and measures, 35'x12'x10'.

I would sand blast and re paint with por15.......stuff is amazing and the metal will rot before the paint......and they sell a rust inhibiting primer......I did my push bar and several trailer hitches that are all perfect to this day.

5 years for the cost of spray paint is still a pretty good option, IMO. But I'm cheap...

Gavin,

I thought I seen an add for a new advanced rustoleom paint. Or maybe another brand. Something said, about 10yrs lasting service.

but maybe it was a dream...LOL

Yellow pages. Plenty of powdercoaters out there. Take one chair, get a price and tell him you haxe "X" more you need done.. We got a guy up in Lakewood, Nj about 15 miles north on route 9 that is really good. Keep looking, although, KMart, WalMart and others are having patio furniture sales right now. Might be worth a look. Bob

Gavin,

Since it is lawn/patio furniture, be sure to mention that to them, and you are not looking for perfection (show car finish). Also, if you you are willing to wait a little longer for them to squeeze it into the oven with other orders that do not fill the oven you can get a better price since that gives them a lot of flexibility to get all the pieces done in a batches and at their most economical rates.

Also, I am assuming that you just want a basic color like black, brown, green, white, etc., with no special masking....They do make some fancy metalics, pearls and transparent (candy colors) but the powders are much more expensive and the transparent colors require more detailed surface preparation since it will be visible under the color finish.

Bid was $300 for all 5 pieces to be sandblasted and powdercoated gloss black. Left them there last Saturday. The place had all sorts of neat stuff getting coated- looked like nice work.

Damn I'm good !! Maybe I should go on the Price Is Right !:grin:

I think you will be happier with the powder coating rather than conventional paint. I have used a lot of paint like epoxy's, but none seem to hold up as well as powder coating, especially for outdoor use.

How long will it take before the furniture is ready? Also, post a photo if you can.

I would think it will be done this week. Wife wanted gloss black. I saw plenty of work in various colors that had come out of the oven. It all looked real nice to me. The guy said they run one color at a time to avoid overspray/contamination (and I am sure to avoid waste from too many set-up changes). Maybe they are waiting for more black to run with my stuff.

I asked about spraying it with bedliner. The guy said he could do that too, but it wastes about 90% of the product. He seemed to act like it might cost more for bedliner than powder coat, so I didn't press it further.
