Yeah, JohnnyO, but I don't think you use them while backing up (unless you simply mean in general this plow will make things more difficult when backing up, to which I agree.).

Judging by the picture (and after reading the text) these blades are engineered for use like an old rear-mounted field plow in a forward motion. I would suspect you have to angle the blade quite steep to keep the snow from accumulating under the back bumper. That, and you are packing down all the snow you are driving on as you move forward, not to mention you wouldn't be able to drive into snow very deep before getting bogged down.

Seems like a waste of money to me, unless you only get a few fluffy inches at a time (no more than 10, I would guess).

But, I have never used one and am just commenting on the seeming dynamics and physics at play.

It is a pull behind design. Which means any snow you move you will have to move again. Like if you drag it to the road. Since it is behind you you at the very least have to raise the plow, pull ahead, lower the plow and push it off to the side using the back side of the plow. If you pull it to an area that you can not drive away from you will have to back over the pile of snow you just drug out....

For your own personal driveway this may be ok. Beyond that I'm not seeing it to be to good.

Is it an answer, yes. Are there better answers out there, I think so..

Unless I missed it, I see no pricing info on this guy's site. That usually means they are less than proud of the value of their product.

no it usually means that they want you to call to get a more exact quote. If he was not proud of the product then, A) why would he sell it? and B) why would he post videos of the plow at work?

From the video it looks like it works fine. If u watch the video, you can push snow by dropping the blade and backing up, you dont always have to drop the blade then pull it......

Yeah, the video seems to show about 6" of fluffy snow and a flat driveway. Those are ideal conditions (IMHO) , but conditions that may apply to many homeowners throughout the year. It probably works very well for those conditions, and faster than a snow blower. But will it work well for all conditions, including deeper, heavier snow?

Exactly. And once you get the snow to where you want to put it, I guess you'd have to back over the pile, so you're not going to get it to the edge of anything. OTOH someone around here, I'm not joking, has adapted a plow to the front of an AWD Astro. One of the light clear plastic ones, but still....

Ford does not recommend plowing with SLA-suspended Rangers/Explorers/Mazdas/Tracs but I think if you stick to a 60" plow and you don't get a ton of snow, you'd be okay.

Best plow truck is a battered 1970's 3/4 ton Ford or Chevy. Strong, solid front axle, and simple. By spring it will be bent in the middle and have a shot tranny or clutch, so you just pull the plow equipment off, junk it, and buy another one in the fall.

Scott...let just talk snow plows here. I just went to Myers plows website, Western snow plows website and Boss snow plows website. ALL of which do not have pricing for their plows on their websites. They are just a few well known companies who make snow plows. Do you think those companies aren't proud of thier products because they dont list a price? The same goes for calling a company and getting a price. If you dont have time to make a call about prices then maybe really you aren't interested in seriously buying a product.

Did you take time to research and make calls before you bought your ST? I really do hope so.

I feel, with all due respect, in my experience, if you dont research, you will end up getting ripped off and actually paying too high of a price.

it sounds silly to say you dont have time to research a product because they ask you to call for info

Anybody take time to read through the "About Us" on the site? Here's an exerpt:

plows in forward and reverse directions

patented design diverts snow to left or right automatically

no snow buildup under tires

video demonstration and testimonials available

proven patented design perfected over 15 years of field use

"Don't think I would ever need one here in "Sunny" Florida"

Don't be silly, you could put sand paddles on your Trac (like they do the dune buggies) and pull it across the beach. Too bad it will "automatically" push it to one side or the other...

I think the whole design, from a mechanical engineering view point, is terrible. Several of the reasons are given above. In addition you can not reasonably plow VERY high snow since you are limited to the ground clearance of the Trac.

Jlevin75, yes, I saw all that on their website.

They can "claim" anything, and the video as I said seems to be some pretty ideal conditions.

Case-in-point is the claim of "No snow buildup under tires". That in my mind is a defensive claim to fend of what is a logical criticism, and I can see no way that they can stand behind that claim for all snow conditions and usage scenarios (e.g. if snow is deep and I have to pull the plow and not push it then I can't help but build up snow under the tires). In other words, it's a claim that IMHO doesn't hold water, and if that one doesn't which other ones don't?

Like I said, it might work well under many conditions. And it might possibly be "the best tow behind plow on the market" (another claim), but that still doesn't mean it's worth the price; and what IS the price anyway? ;)

This is interesting. I live at 10,000 feet elevation near Breckenridge Colorado and plow often. With daily freeze/thaw cycles and lots of sun shine, here is the cardinal rule: Never ever drive over your driveway with snow on it. The result tracks become ice after a few cycles and you will have it all season. If we come home to snow on the drive, we walk up and drive the ole plow down. As JohnnyO points out, use a replaceable '70's tank for your plow. We never register or insure it, it never leaves 4wd or the property. We currently have a 70's full size blazer that does a respectable job. The Trac is indispensable in this environment, this wonderful truck should never be abused with a plow. The plow trucks really take a beating!

The drag behind plow would be a joke. Drive over the show you are about to plow? Use the plow in reverse? If the Trac has a shortcoming, it would be backing it down this driveway! Thanks Gavin, I hope Jay Leno tonight is as entertaining.
