Reverse Camera

I was just wondering if anyone of you know, if the back tailgate handle from a newer F150 would fit a GEN 2 SP... I'm looking for the camera feature....

The SHORT bed 150 has the same tailgate and some f150 handles do work... Don't know what ones have the camera.

Yes, it will work. But be ready to pay a hefty price if you are going to use the Ford kit. By the time I finished pricing it, I was well over $600 just in parts at my cost.



I ended up just buying the handle cover itself and putting in a cheap $15 camera from EBay. Ran the wires through the gate and to my Alpine IVA-W505. The handle was somwhere around $50 if I remember correctly. Easy first from there...

What does a camera in the tailgate do for you? Don't take the question the wrong way, I am just curious? Is it for hooking up a trailer so you can see the trailer ball? Or is your rear window blocked by something?

There is a huge blind spot caused by the high, closed bed of the ST. Essentially you can't see anything shorter than 4' when it is within 10 or 20 feet of the ST and directly behind you. Things that are easy to back over are: kids, kids toys, garbage cans, etc...

"Check surroundings for safety" is a none-on-us CYA to put the burden on the driver and not the backup camera manufacturer.



Seems to me that if I am going to "check my surroundings" before driving, which I suspect includes walking around my vehicle, etc, then that kind of lessens the need for a backup camera.



I know, I know...driver's ed 101. Walk around the vehicle and inspect it and your surroundings before entering the vehicle and taking off.

I've got the part number at the house and will post it tonight. I'll also find the camera I used from EBay. Not all will fit the hole as they come in different diameters and different lengths. I finally found one that was pretty close. I just had to file the hole a minimal bit to get it to slide in.

Just as Sal said, it is just to help you be able to see the area in close proximity behind your vehicle. I basically just use mine for hooking up trailers so I don't go too far and crush a tag. When I put my ST in reverse, the camera comes on the screen of my Alpine, so I can see right behind me.

Thanks Chad, I like the 45 degree camera mount. The Sport Trac sits up high and it's impossible to see anything below the top tailgate line. I have the Pioneer AVIC-Z3 head unit and my rear view camera is currently mounted in the center of my license plate which is perfect for backing under a trailer. My camera shoots straight across the top of the trailer ball so you see exactly where you need to get the trailer coupling. My head unit also allows me to view the camera while driving which is nice when towing (which I do fairly often). I tow a flatbed trailer with 4 motorcycles so you can see the inside tie downs which occasionally break or come loose. The downside is that since the camera is mounted so low you don't get a good perspective behind you because there is no depth perception. I think the 45 degree mount will give a better overall view of things. If not, I can always go back to my current set up.

For comparison sake. This is the PEAK camera with a 7" moniter. I am using the license plate mount. It gives a nice view way past the rear bumper.

I like any of the licsene plate ideas. Or I have thought of drilling a hole in the O in the Ford imblem.

I have a B/U camera using the license plate mounts. Even with the tailgate down there is a clear view of the rear. I would assume that the handle mounted cameras wouldn't work with the tailgate down.

The tailgate part number is 8L3Z-9943400-AC. List is $107.26 - I picked it up from my dealer for $65.55.



The ST is filthy and its 11:30 when I took these, but this is the handle:

This is the image on my Alpine IVA-W505. My driveway slopes and I'm backed in, but I think you get the picture...

Whaaah, $66! I paid $200 for my Pioneer camera.

My total was somewhere around $100 when done (not including the Alpine). $70 for the handle, $20 for the camera off EBay, and $10 for A/V cables to go to the head unit.

When I looked into it the Ford Tailgate handle piece for the Camera was $135 itself.
