Anyone here ever get the “They all do that” or “that’s normal” when trying to get a dealer to repair your vehicle? This is dealer speak for we are clueless and maybe it won’t totally fail until the warranty is over. :)

Depends, what is your problem? The ST does have some quirks, but usually complaining enough or going to another dealer will get it fixed.

Have them document it, get a copy and keep it in your records. This goes for any dealer visit for any reason. Verbal dismissal means nothing.

Over the course of many years and several new vehicles from different manufactures I have been told by them all that “they all do that” for various problems. My 07 ST was knocking and I got the “They all do that” from my dealer. After calling Ford customer service a field engineer was sent to check it out and told the dealer to install a new engine. The engine in my ST was also idling rough and missing and would just stop running for no apparent reason after changing the engine it still misses and idles rough and cuts off. Dealer says the check engine light has to come on before they can know what is wrong. I had a 01 ST for years no problems except it had the infamous whine in first gear dealer said “they all do that”. I found a TSB that said it was repairable and was a known issue. I could go on but bottom line is for some reason dealers hate warranty work probably because it does not pay as well as when the customer has to pay.

I always get it documented have enough now to invoke Lemon Law but would really rather have my ST fixed. I love how it rides and drives and looks just want an engine that runs correctly.

i guess i'm very lucky the dealer for which i deal with.

(i have purchaed 8 fords from them) each time i go there

they can not do enough. excellent dealer in my opinion

I have only had "can not duplicate" with a few intermittent issues. Those ones that do it everywhere except for a 20 miles radius of the dealership. Damn trucks. Overall my dealership is pretty good with fixing my issues.

I ensure that someone sees/hears the problem before I leave the vehicle so they can't pull that cannot duplicate crapola

I have got the "air in the system" twice from my dealer when trying to get them to fix the power steering shudder. Got another appointment next week and this time going to take the TSB with me hope it works.

Firedog,

Thanks, first, for you law enforcement service!

Yes, I get the "they all do it" thing, from the dealer. Warranty work does not pay well, at all,

and looks bad on the manufacturer/factory.

The issue with the P/S Pump is known since late '03 model builds. Tell the dealer that you

are aware of the TSB and that you reqeust them to honor it by replacing it with a Ford

Explorer power steering pump (has just enough higher pressure to alleviate this condition,

without replacing other components). Mine has it too, ('05), and it drives me nuts in the

parking-lot-manuever thing, trying to back in or out of a space, etc...Shuddering, jerking,

vibrating, and so on! I posted the TSB way back , with the number. I'll see if I can find it

again, here in a minute!:)

Here it is.

When you click on the link, then click on the "Get Summary" tab, and this will pull

up the brief description of the issue, with all of the pertinent reference numbers to

give your dealer. Did this for mine, they(dealer) had NO ARGUEMENT with me!!!;)

Numbers:

*Make: Ford

*Model: Explorer Sport Trac

*Years: 2003 (Late Production) to 2005

*Service Bulletin #: 0427

*NHSTA Item #: 10018061

*Issue: Customer complaints of power steering shudder, or jerk, during low-speed parking

lot maneuvers/slow-speed turns. Issue has been resolved successfully with replacement of

power steering pump with part number from Ford Explorer (Not Sport Trac!)

Hope this helps!!!;)

Thanks tracnblack I had printed it out once before but couldn't find it today so I just printed it again. When I called to make this last appointment and told them I was still having the problem and that I had read that it was a common problem I was talking to one of the mechanics and he asked if I could bring in a copy of what I had read. I told him I could bring the TSB and he said that would be great so I'm thinking I'll get it fixed this time....or maybe I'll get the "can not duplicate" this time. I dont mean to diss the dealer so bad but I know of a lot of people that have had problems with them lately and unfortunately it is the only Ford dealer near me. I am also having them do an oil change and tire roatation and take it for a ride and check on the tire noise and the pulse in the brakes that seem to be worse than normal so I'm sure they will be quite a bit of money out of me anyway but I want to get everything looked at all at once, especially before warranty runs out if by chance problems will be covered under warranty.

firedog,

Again, Get, or Have, EVERYTHING DOCUMENTED while under warranty, or at any time that you

are paying for a service-procedure to be performed on your vehicle, whether "In-Warranty"

(especially), or even out of warranty! If the dealer EVER tells you that they cannot, will not

or are not required to provide you with documentation, and/or a reciept, for any reason,

either call their bluff, or "Run Like Hell', if you have not already incurred charges for

diagnostic procedures, etc!!! They are most likely trying to hide, or cover up something

if they tell you that you are not entitled to any paperwork!

This is one good "Bellweather", to tell if you have an honest dealership/service department

or not.

I know I work at G.M., and I am on a Ford-Type website, but this is what I do for a living,

everyday, and we have to pull together! Just trying to be honest, not dissing Ford, or anything

like that, as my Wife works at/for Ford in Brentwood, TN.!

Just giving my honest opinion. ;)
