Heard on the news that the U.S. will be reimbursing holocaust survivors (totaling 25 million dollars) due to lost belongings (gold, jewelry, etc) from a train that the US siezed during the liberation of Europe from the Nazis... and a formal apology will be given as well.

I am sorry for their loss. But what about what we are owed for LIBERATING them? (I guess there is no "calling it even"?)

I know it isn't the best attitude, but I can't help it... the U.S., Britts, and others deserve a thank you, NOT a bill!

I am upset that after 60 years, some are wanting reimbursement and an apology... I guess they forget who saved their lives.

Even if the is voluntary by our government, accepting the money is a lot of nerve to our lost military men who died during WWII.

(...and the world goes 'round while the people fall down...)

Josh, what you are seeing is a form of vote buying that has become so brazen, it's an embarrassment.

World Trade Center victims. Storm victims. Holocaust victims. Suddenly, the United States Treasury is like an insurance company that pays anybody who suffers a newsworthy loss. No policy necessary. Just have your congressman call the Treasury directly with your sad story and a copy of the newpaper clipping.

I feel badly when bad things happen to innocent people. Many people in my family tree were taken from this earth by the Nazis. But that doesn't mean I think the U.S. gov't owes my family any money.

Bad stuff happens. Buy insurance.

I agree with Rich... is it any different than the US Government spending untold billions of dollars on the gulf coast hurricaine survivors. When did it become our job to reimburse people unwilling or unable to buy insurance or plan for for a hurricaine in an area known for its hurricaines.

I'm not saying that the people don't need our help... they do! What I'm saying is that nobody held a gun to their head and forced them to live there and not protect themselves against the fury of Mother Nature.

Ya know, seeing stuff like this really pisses me off. This country will spend millions on folks who are not even our citizen's and we have men and women on our own streets that are starving and homeless. We need to start taking care of our own before we go spending money that we don't have for someone who won't even be thankful for our efforts. We have spent millions of dollars and more importantly American blood to save poeple like this and they want an apology and money? Tell them the money they want was spent on ammo, fuel, and food for those that saved them. As for the apology, tell them to apologize to the mothers, wives, and children of the men that died trying to save them.

Cliff

P.S. I know that some will probly get mad at me for my comments so for anyone who is mad at me for making comments against our country know this,,,

First and foremost; I love my country, always have.

Second: I fought for my country and the right to say what I did. Before you open your mouth against me can you say the same?

Here is the link to the story, so everyone will be on the same page.

I am disappointed that the reason why this is even an issue, is that some soldiers looted the train. They were not acting as soldiers during this event. They were common criminals, stealing while in our uniform, and using our weapons during the seige. This happened while both of my grandfathers were dodging Japanese bullets in the Far East.

I love the USA as much as anyone, but it's time to stop being the world's sugar daddy. Reimbursements, handouts, wide open borders, NAFTA, CAFTA, it's time for it all to stop.

I agree with Fred. We work hard for our money and to have the government fritter it away pisses me off.

Then you add this payout stuff for the train thing 50 years ago, $250 BILLION for something that should have been more or less taken care of years ago, then the Hawaiian movement to send 2/3's the state back to sovereign nation status, the calls for slave reparations by some of the black community... it's all sickening.

One of my grandfathers hit the beach at Normandy driving a tank. His grandfather came over from Germany in the late 1800's. I cannot find any evidence in my family tree that anyone owned slaves, participated in the coop in Hawaii or anything of the sort yet I am going to punished? Whatever happened to being a free country? we are now indentured to the US Government and to the World.

It seems to me that most of the comments here seem to follow similar lines. For as long as I can remember the U.S. has been playing "Daddy Warbucks"... throwing around our money like it were candy. Its to the point now that much of the world, including our own citizens, have developed the expectation that the U.S. will always be there to dole out the dollars.

How is it our responsibility to play police department to the world, hand out freebies to anyone who needs or wants it, and runs to help at a moments notics? And then having to deal with some nations where they shake our hands while kicking us in the rear. To quote the late Yul Brynner, "It's a puzzlement"...

Nelson has it right: We are agreeing to pay restitution for items our soldiers stole from the nazis who initially stole it from the Jews. But the items belonged to the Hungarian Jews, not the Nazis and not the US Soldiers that 'liberated' them. They should have been returned at the time, not subject to looting by US Soldiers.

$25.5 miliion seems cheap to me.

And the Austrian, German and Swiss governments ARE paying/HAVE payed restitution to Holocaust survivors for money and other valuables stolen from them during WWII. I think the Swiss banking industry recently paid $1.25 Billion in restitution for bank accounts it seized during WWII and more is forthcoming as additional bank account records are 'discovered.'

I agree on the other stuff, though - definitely vote buying. The only difference today from the Tammany Hall days is the amount spent and that it is done 'above board and legal' instead of uder the table.

American Citizans have been paying restitution to the Japanese for many years.

If you know me, you know what I am refering to.

Ok...here I go...

If the US had gotten involved in the holocaust fight in the 30's when FDR first saw the intel on the concentration camps, not denied access to the US to Jewish refugees, or just stood up and told Hitler we were coming for him...I'd agree with some of your arguments.

Who knows how many millions of lives would have been saved if this nation stood up for the jews. But since not many people in this country considered the kikes to be people, it was easy to dismiss the reports as propoganda (many people still do).

We have a responisbility to safegaurd property that we liberate from an oppressor. If this were not the case, then why do we care so much about the Iraqi's property that was in the hands of Hussein?

When I began working on my wife's geneolgy, I could go no further than Ellis Island in the late 1890's. All the records of her family (including her relatives) are gone. Nothing exists. These people were wiped out of all history. No civil records, birth, wedding, death records...nothing.

Sugar daddy? Votes? You people are so friggin' callous and self-centered it is disgusting.

While agree that people view the US as a cash cow prime for slaughter, this issue is so minor in the big picture. We through trillions away on the deadbeats of our nation in hope of doing away with our own feelings of guilt because we have and the street people have not. You people should be screaming and blasting our government for that.

Reparations for slavery is another issue. We can go back to the Constitution and DoI drafters to see that our nation was trying hard to dissolve slavery. Millions of Union soldiers died in this cause. If reparations are to be paid, it should come from England, Spain, and France...the establishers of the African slave trade.

Well,...

Pearl Harbor was a reason to go to war, in fact (if I recall correctly) FDR was willing to go to war, but just needed the reason to... so when Japan bombed PH, he was ready. Of course Hitler declared war on America around this time (or a short time after). So, we saw that Hitler was a bigger threat to democracy and to us, so we decided to go into Europe. I HIGHLY doubt our intentions were to liberate, but to stop National Socialist from taking Europe and eventually the US.

I didn't think FDR new of the camps? I guess he did... but I was lead to believe we "stumbled" upon a lot of what we found, and that the camps were news flashes to all (even residence of towns in which the camps were being constructed and used).

BUT, we still liberated, We still died for them too... so call my thinking self centered, or whatever... I just feel for our vets who died for the U.S., The world, and for me.

God Bless them.

Who has this trainload of stuff? The US government? If so, then instead of giving them $25.5M cash, give them their train, and be done with it. But if it's not in the government's hands, and never was in the government's hands, then go after the groups/individuals that took it and/or currently have it, not the US in general. And/or, after this settlement, the US government should go after the looters and the loot. But you know that won't happen--they'll pick up the tab when others accuse them of wrong-doing, but will refuse to ever make anyone else pick up the tab for their own wrong-doing.

When you lose your families at the hands of a dictator and then your liberators steal everything from you again...then you can make your jokes.

Heartless bastards.

When you lose your families at the hands of a dictator and then your liberators steal everything from you (again<<<---?)...then they can ask for it back and request money and act as if the liberators didn't save you or anything.

Thoughtless bastards.
