I want to take care of some deep rock chips and a bumper scratch that took off the paint before I detail my Trac. What products do you folks recommend? In particular what grade wet/dry sandpapers and where to get them. Thanks!

IF the scratch or chip is onto the paint and the primer or metal is showing, Sanding will make it worse....

I just finished fixing 2 paint chips on my Explorer where my 2 year old knock a bike over into it. I used some touch up paint to fill the spots (about half the size of a dime), then wet sanded with 3M 2000 grit wet sand paper (use plenty of liquid). I used Mequiar's Quick Detailer Spray as the wet spray. I then used 3M Rubbing Compound to clean the clear coat back up, then Mequiar's Gold Class wax. If you really look, you can see the spots, but you have to know they are there and really be looking for them. I had to do multiple coats on one of the spots to get the thickness right to match the truck, but you just repeat the steps a couple of times and it works pretty well.

Aloha Cobra,

Sometimes if the scratch or chip is deep, you will have to apply several coats of touch up paint. When the area is filled above the surrounding paint then sand to make it flat. Use your fingers to feel the flatness. Next rubbing compound to remove the scratches then wax. Shake the paint VERY well (2 min.) and it should look great.

Good luck Ed

Sounds just like what I did Ed. Guess I should have elaborated a little more... :)

My wife had to have them pointed out to her as she couldn't find the fixes. Guess I notice them just because I'm so finicky...
