Digtal Odometer....

I want to throw this out to the all the fine people to see if this has happened before or any reasons why it would happen.



A friend of the family has a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokkee. (1st mistake in my opinion) She has only had it for like maybe 4 months. She took it in for service a month ago for a check-up and the mileage was around 19,000 miles. She was driving today and now the digital odometer reads over 29,000 miles. She hasn't gone on any long trips in the last month and has only driven locally (1-4 miles at a time).In no way has she put 10,000 miles on it in a month. She bought it with like 15K on it just less than 6 months ago. The daeler doesn't know of it happening before and isn't willing to even look at it.



What could have gone wrong and is there any suggestions on a course she can take to get this taken care of?



FYI, this is her SECOND Jeep GC and the first one the mileage was forged and when the transmission went she thought it was still under warrenty, to find out the dealer lied and then wouldn't cover it. Gotta love the local dealers around my area.

It is a digital system, it works off a speed transmitter from the tranny and thru the ECM. Any one of those items can still function but not be accurate. Either a bad formula within the ECM or the Speed Sensor sending bad information to the ECM.



The part you read really has no bearing other than it is a display of what it has received. The Dash Cluster does retain the memory of the number(s), but in most cases it is not the physical working part like it use to be in the past.



What I would do is,,, get a GPS and track the miles and see if they are comparative to the dash or if the dash is adding up faster for some reason.



I suggest she start a log on paper and maybe even take a picture of the mileage simply as it may be useful if she needs to go back tot he dealer or make a legal claim. Get a news paper, have it in the picture, this will be a concrete means of dating the picture, (hang onto the paper as it may be needed if legal matters come about).

Sounds like the previous owner my have had some quite large tires on it and compensted for tire size and when they put the origanal tires back on it forgot to undo the program. Possibly?:huh:
