That's what I was afraid of but I've seen some that mounted to the frame, which seems to make sense. But wasn't sure if anyone here had tried one. Here's the link to the one that really caught my eye: http://www.codyhitch.com/universal%20extra.htm

Let me know what you guys think or have experienced.

Doug, I am no expert, but keep in mind the ST bed is very short comparably to a normal size pickup, and where you can mount this hitch has to be over the rear axle. I have no doubt that it can be mounted, but where it will be located may make it a bit hard to use. The cab of the ST will be quite close to the hitch. Depending on the trailer, it might contact the cab on turns.

I guess I dont really know the Terms, but I was thinking this is a Gooseneck:

And this is a 5th wheel:

Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Just my $.02. Dave

Dave is correct. Even a Dodge Ram Mega Cab has problems pulling fifth wheel travel trailers do to the front of the square trailer contacting the cab during a turn. We pull very heavy loads...over 25,000 lbs on goose neck trailers for farming that's why I was wondering what you were trying to pull.

For a 5th wheel setup....you need, at the very least, an F150. I would not attempt a 5th wheel in an ST.

Especially a Gen 2 ST with IRS. I seriously doubt that it can take the load like a solid rear axle.

Actually I was thinking about a 3-4k lb light weight travel trailer, like a Scamp or some of the other lite-weights. I hadn't even considered the independent suspension. What I was looking at is the fact that it tows our boat like a full size truck and the towing capacity is 7K+ lbs w/ the 4.6L.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Load capacity of Gen II is higher than Gen I, right? What difference would suspension design make as long as it was ample load capacity? Gen II has stronger engine, stronger transmission, stronger chassis. I would feel much safer pulling with a Gen II trac than a Gen I . Also, Gen II has integrated brake controller capability.
