Ahhh! Fill neck in the middle behind the plate. How nostalgic.

You can thank the government for the disappearance of that. It is because the placement there worked only when the tank was behind the rear axle and that became a safety issue when read-end collisions ruptured the tank and there were fires. The old Pinto's were notorious for that problem.

My 61 Galaxie has the fill behind the license plate. Cant be on an upward incline if I want a full tank..

No one has mentioned the most obvious reason.

The gas tank on most cars is located in front of the rear axle. Also for safety issues.
