Ok... I've searched through here and the owners manual and I can't find out if this is right. I've inserted a pic of the hvac controls and what mine does on certain settings. The red circle is the one in question. My A/C is ON in that position, but not on in just the upper vent position  . The A/C is also on in the A/C and Max A/C Positions as it's supposed to be. Can someone let me know if this is correct. The manual says that position is just for "outside air" (I call it "vent").

I just turn the A/C on or off by pressing the A/C button on my trac.

Also, the A/C is on automatically in the two defrost settings on the right.

Both defrost settings also run your A/C, but I'm pretty sure none of the three vent settings run it. Just turn the switch to each position and listen for the clicking of your A/C compressor engaging on the motor.

My ST is an '04 and I don't have a button for the a/c. I does come on in the "red" position above, but not the other two "vent" positions. I was just wondering if it is supposed to. I wouldn't think so, but it does. I don't remember it doing it when it was cooler outside. I says in the manual that it won't come on below 43 degrees outside, but I would think that is only in the two "A/C" positions.

Now that I think about it, I remember a lot of vehicles will run the A/C when any "floor" mode is selected so that if the heater is on the air will be dried by the A/C and help dry out any melted snow or water that's on the floor in the winter.

This good information for up to 2003. It may be different for 04/05, but I doubt it. Also note the compressor operation above 6 degrees C. (43 degrees F.)

I'm glad you posted this as I've also noted the AC seems to sometimes be on in switch positions where you would not expect it to be (in my '03 ST XLT). I've also found that sometimes I need to switch back to the OFF (center) position and then back one click to the left for vent only. Going directly from AC to Vent sometimes doesn't turn the AC off.

As for hearing the compressor click on... sorry, but I can't. I guess my compressor is very quiet (at least from inside the cab).
