Good thing chickens aren't cute...I throw one or two of them on the fire every weekend.

No, I don't condone killing little kittens, but I can't help but think that if he took them to the SPCA and had them put down he wouldn't get any jail time. So the killing itself isn't the issue, but clearly its the method used to kill...and I really doubt they had any experts testify as to whether or not the kittens suffered.

I have way too much time on my hands here today!

See the link...

We have different standards for what is humane and what isn't depending on the appeal and use of the animal.

Is killing an animal by burning ever humane, Tom? I cannot think of death by fire being a prescribed method of putting down any animal.

I see your point, though, that had he killed her pet hermit crab by throwing it into a forest, it would have been a lesser issue.

E.g., I find this hilarious. Then again, maybe it's because there are eleventy billion in PA.

While I do find it sick, I don't think he should be in jail for a year and a half. It is still just an animal.

An even better question...is KILLING ever humane...regardless the technique?

It's the same problem I have with PETA....they want chickens to be killed more humanely. At the end of the process, they are tossed on a fire, then the burnt flesh tore of the bone as they are chewed up...that's not humane to me...but I LOVE THE TASTE.

I'm at the top of the food chain...that means I am killing and eating things, often for no other reason that I want to. Either its ALL WRONG, or it's ALL RIGHT.

speaking off animals and how tasty they are but that leads to vegans. I saw vegetarian eggs today at Whole Foods....how do they do that?

Differing opinions on 'that side of the fence'? http://www.kingston.ac.uk/ksikhsoc/Articles/word/Are-eggs-vegetarian.doc

I am sorry. This guy needs more jail time.

Killing an animal, such as a chicken, the meat is used as food. Killing an animal such as a cat or dog, for no other reason than anger, is wrong.

Throwing a lobster in boiling hot water has been determined to be the proper cooking method on that animal. Cruel, or not, to the animal itself doesn't matter in that case. Now if there is a better way to end the life of a lobster, I suggest doing that.

Throwing an animal into a fire, without having any intentions of eating the flesh of it is wrong. A life, no matter how minute we think it is, should be preserved. When it comes to our survival, all bets are off.

There is a major difference. Now, if that guy fed his pet snake with those kittens, so be it. There is still a question of his intentions of hurting his girlfriend, but the loss of those kittens life was used to sustain the life of another animal.

Saw a great bumper sticker the other day....

VEGETARIAN - primitive word for lousy hunter.

Yes, Caymen, you described my position well. We make seemingly arbitrary rules as to what is acceptable and what in unacceptable killing when it comes to animals in our world. Stepping on a cockroach, good. Stepping on a kitten, bad. Killing game birds for sport (no food there on many of them), good. Killing a bald eagle, bad.

We rationalize one killing as justified, often times even noble, and the other as bad. I'm not some PETA nut...just the opposite. It's a friggin little kitten. The guy needs help with anger management, but instead he goes to jail for almost 2 years and ends up coming out more screwed up than when he went in.

If it he killed the lady's pet tarantula by throwing it into the fire there wouldn't even be a case.

I agree with Caymen...

Not to mention, I've seen dogs smarter than some people...

I hunt, but my kills are clean and quick... I don't get any pleasure from watching an animal burn alive.. now people... they're a different story; I hate plenty of them... :)

Seriously, this guy needs to visit the fire pits as well...

But the bigger issue here is his raige and temper... I bet he would have killed her if she were home... so send this guy off...:D

there is a huge difference in this case. Throwing kittens into a fire was just plain cruel and the whole thing was done in malice.

By the way the Mashpee Boys took 2 deer yesterday in the land of the Waumpanoag, I shot a nice doe, sitting here at work for the next 2 days and i will be back at it friday and Saturday!;)

Josey, the "huge difference" you see is rationalization. Deer tastes good and aren't pets so we don't see shooting them as cruel.

Again, if it was the lady's pet lizard or spider do we think it would have gone to trial?

That is a good question. I am not sure about the law, but for myself, I feel the same rules should apply. As much as I hate spiders and snakes, a good spider or snake is a dead one. At the same time, those animals deserve to be treated with respect and live. If there is a infestation of snakes and spiders, then fine. Kill at will! If the populations are in check, let them live. As much as I hate them, I would not cause harm unless I had to.

Just because I don't eat a cat doesn't change anything. If I knew of someone that was going to throw a cow, pig, chicken, turkey, duck, etc. into a fire to burn it alive, I would report that information to the proper people.
