Actually, it's better on the engine not to let it idle. Best way to warm the vehicle is drive it at slow speeds until the gauge reaches normal temps. Mine is usually warm after driving a mile or 2.

you must live in a warmer climate than Central New York. Either that or you are one of those idiot's driving with a baseball size defrosted opening in your windshield.

I have always warmed my vehicles up prior to driving, winter and summer. Nothing worse than putting a vehicle under any load without all fluid's up to operating temperature.

Joe: lol, no I wouldn't do that... I never have to scrape ice as I park my vehicle in a garage.

Check with the experts, they all will tell you it's better to warm up an engine by driving it than idling it.

George - hard to just get in and drive when your windshield has freezing rain on it. Hence, why people were warming up their cars. They were just dumb enough to leave their cars with the keys in it unlocked.

I was always under the impression that you need to get the oil warmed up so that the engine is properyl lubed when you get going. I may be wrong.

My dad always told me that it is best to at least let the engine idle down before taking off - I dont know what the reason behind thisis, but I do it anyway.

The only times I let my truck warm up is when it's under 20* F or there's heavy frost on the windshield, and then I only let it go just long enough to start getting heat. And it's always locked (I also love the keypad!). But I live and work in the country, where theft is unlikely. Most of my co-workers let their vehicles warm up for as long as 15-20 minutes, which I think is a huge waste of gas.

NJ EPA rules make it illegal to leave your vehicle running & unattended while your in a store, etc. Most convenience stores have warning signs to that effect at or near their entrances.
