Vitter described his transgressions as a private family matter, justifying any disclosure of his misdeeds.
Vitters steadfast refusal to utter an additional word is one reason he remains in office today.
Weiner and the Democratic leadership failed to learn from Vitter. Weiner lied before coming clean. When first caught, he could have admitted mistakes, refused to answer questions, disappeared for a while, and allowed the incident to die down. Eighteen months later, New York voters could have determined whether his transgressions were forgivable.
