JJJake,

I agree that all drivers should show common courtesy to the other drivers, when ever possible. However I think this thread is really dealing with people who demand courtesy, and assume that they have the right and privilage to cut in front of you or do the other rude things that discourteous drivers do.



I think we all make mistakes while driving and I don't think anyone should try to get even because someone made a minor judgement error while driving. I do feel that some people do things on purpose just for spite or to insite a reaction from another driver, and they surely do not deserve any courtesy.



Let he who has never committed a traffic faux pas, cast the first stone...:grin:

TJR, I hear you there. And way too many people here in Minnesota feel that that's actually a virtue. They even have a name for it--"Minnesota Nice". (gag) In my opinion, a bit of rudeness is actually beneficial, as, within reason, it's an educational tool. When you do something wrong, and someone gives you an earful as a result, you'll be less likely to do that the next time. But if instead, the other people just smile and wave you in, you're oblivious that your actions are objectionable.



"Minnesota Nice" keeps people "Minnesota Stupid".

Another example of too courteous are the nimrods that are driving into a shopping complex or mall off a main road. Typically these entrances are multi-laned and medianed (two lanes in, two lanes out), and end in a T. Drivers entering can either go left, or they can go right, as they approach the T, but traffic exiting traffic can only go straight through, or turn right or left depending on their direction AND it is the exiting traffic that has a stop signs. Those entering have no stop signs.



The design of these types of accessways is pretty common, and is such so that if there is a backup of traffic, it is within the shopping area, not the main road. It also allows those coming in to get more ready entrance, than those leaving. It works well.



I should say, it works well until some courteous nimrod that is entering STOPS and lets traffic waiting at the stop signs to the left or the right to go.



I see this all the time.



Now, it is one thing to enter with caution, especially if turning left at the T. But one should never stop...I don't care if the cars are backed up 10 deep. If you don't have a stop, and the other guy does, then you should NEVER stop and wave him on.



This particular action is one, that when performed causes a rear-end collision, IMHO, should 100% excuse the person rear-ending the nimrod!

I agree, that's the layout every mall I've seen has. Every mall also has these nimrods who have to stop the flow of traffic to do the "right thing", because they think they know more about the flow of traffic than the civil engineers who designed the mall's roadways. :banghead:

I also agree. That behavior at multi-way stops has become so ridiculous that I'd vote to replace them all with traffic circles. Traffic circles are fun, convenient, and if there is no obvious traffic in them, one only needs to proceed slowly, never stop. Better for the MPGs, and shown safer in my area. (Via analysis of accident counts at "troubled" 4-way stops which were replaced with circles.)



Whenever any idea of more traffic circles arises, the public outcry is strong. People as a whole seem to fear these "European" innovations. That's good, maybe those drivers will pay more attention with them around. It's not as though they pay attention to the stop signs at our current 4-way stops, or to whom the right-of-way belongs. (Or, as it is colloquially known here, "rightaway" :banghead

Reminds me of another. I hate seeing motorcycles weave through traffic on a highway at 100+ mph.

Wow!. The driver following that truck is an worse driver than the truck driver to just blindly follow it during the passing. It the truck had whipped back to the right lane to miss an oncoming, the following car wouldn't had had a prayer. That would have quieted the laughing in a hurry.

It is even more interesting when you know what they are saying. I think one of the passengers is afraid, but laughing from nervousness. There were quite a bit of curse words, a "thanks" (maybe for the truck clearing a path for them) and a "Jesus Maria" thrown in there. At the end, they read off the speed of the truck and it's license plate. The truck comes from my city.



Here is a video clip of a recent accident near my home. The accident killed an 18 month old girl who was in the back seat Toyota Yaris. Miraculously, her mom and the two passengers in the BMW behind were uninjured. The driver of the truck was cited, and said the brakes failed. The inspection on the truck was out-of-date. I suspect the high speed and second trailer also had some effect on stopping the vehicle.



Sometimes it isn't good to be in front...or in back.

When you are leaving a congested parking lot (i.e., sporting event), and the car just ahead of you lets in, not one car, but the whole friggin convoy, at the intersections. One-at-a-time, buttheads!
