as above, the U.S truly has the best med care in the world, but the costs are getting out of hand.
The main downside as I see it, will be the curtailment of advances in medical technology.
only the the very Rich will get the latest and greatest.
To give you some Idea, Was envolved in a major Spine surg, case last week (14 Hrs)
(am not an advocate of spine surg, but thats how I make my living)
patient had 16 Titainium screws, Ti rods and cross braces installed, the screws cost 2K each, thats 32 grand, all the rest of the hardware, at least 20 grand, so 50K in hardware, 14 hrs of surg, the Docs, the nurses, me, other supplies= around Maybe 300K, this was a medicare patiant.Your tax dollors at work.
with the new health plan, the same patient will be given a scrip for narcotics and fitted with a back brace, (maybe thats a good thing, dunno)
In England, if your older, and suffer from intractable pain due to cancer and have no money, your given a script for Bromptons solution (heroin,Cocaine and alcohol) go home and live out your days in comfort (maybe thats a good thing, dunno)
Worked in cardiac surg for 40 yrs, the tech advancments In cardiac has been incredable.
In canada and england as I have been told, if you need bypass surg, and your older, your put on a waiting list, maybe for as long as 6 mos. That waiting list has a huge mortality rate,(maybe thats a good thing, dunno)
The system I work in is heavy into robotic surg, machines are 2mil ea, (we have four, is it better? dunno) All I do know is that something has to change, cost containment 20 yrs ago was paramount, today it means nothing, is balls to the wall.
The unused products I see thrown out every day in the OR is mind boggling.
Doc I worked with 10 yrs ago just had to have this laser machine for vascular surg.
Was cheap, 125 grand, he used it twice in two yrs, than moved on and the machine was scraped for maybe 2 cents a pound.
This country needs change for sure (but at what cost? Dunno)
